Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Student Assistant within the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.

Directly under the supervision of the White Laboratory, the Student Assistant will perform supervised research in the area of cancer metabolism. The goal of the summer program is to inspire, motivate and educate the student through mentored cancer research training, co-curricular support, and professional development activities. Under the supervision of the Program Director/Research Mentors, the Student Assistant will engage in research and program related activities focusing on cancer. Additionally, the Student Assistant will learn valuable research skills (experimental, and laboratory techniques) as well as professional career development skills under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator/Research Mentor.

Among the key duties for this position are the following:

  • Receive hands-on training in cutting-edge cancer research.
  • Conduct research in mentor-supervised laboratories in summer.
  • Participate in educational seminars as available.
  • Receive compensation for their time.
  • Attend workshops, seminars, lectures and career development activities as available.

  • Highly motivated and academically able to pursue a career in biomedical/cancer science.
  • Requires the performance of laboratory research.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform job duties.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
  • For undergraduate students, enrollment as an undergraduate major in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with coursework in biology, genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology is highly desirable.
