Job summary

St. Charles Community College invites student tutors to support fellow SCC students in various subjects. Tutors must be SCC students and meet course prerequisites for the subjects they tutor, with recommendations required for each subject.

Job description

Founded in 1986, St. Charles Community College (SCC) has a reputation as one of the best two-year colleges in Missouri. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Tutors will assist students enrolled in SCC courses one-on-one and in group settings. The peer tutor can assist with any assignments from the previously studied curriculum. Other duties may include helping students with study skills, technology, and time management. Must be able to work independently and as a team member. Time management is required for on-time appointments and maintaining a work schedule. There will be mandatory orientation and training sessions.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Student applicants must be current SCC students enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours. Students must have a written recommendation from a Department Chair or faculty member for each subject they will tutor. Students must have successfully completed required courses in at least one of the following subject areas:

  • Biology
  • Business Technology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • English/Writing
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
Requirements:

Students can tutor only in subjects in which they have taken courses at SCC. In specific subjects, students can only tutor courses at a level from which they have already surpassed. An example, a student who has taken English composition I (ENG-101) and not English composition II (ENG-102) cannot tutor a student currently taking ENG-102. Additionally, subject-specific requirements are described below:

Students interested in tutoring Biology:

The Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student up through general Biology: cells to organisms; those who can help students with general Biology: organisms to environment, microbiology, human anatomy, and/or human physiology are preferred.

Peer Tutors in Biology must have taken general biology: cells to organisms (BIO-150) or higher-level Biology at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.

Students interested in tutoring Business Technology:

The Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student up through microcomputer applications; those who can help students with word processing and database applications are preferred.

Peer Tutors in Business Technology must have taken microcomputer applications (BTC-103) or higher-level Business Technology at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.

Students interested in tutoring Chemistry:

The Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student with general chemistry I; those who can also help with general chemistry II, organic chemistry I & II, and/or quantitative analysis are preferred.

Peer Tutors in Chemistry must have taken general chemistry I (CHM-115) or higher-level chemistry at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.

Students interested in tutoring Computer Science:

The Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student through programming fundamentals with Python. Those who can help students with SQL programming, microcomputer applications, C++ programming, and/or C# programming are preferred.

Peer Tutors in computer science must have taken programming fundamentals with Python (CPT-135) or higher-level computer science at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.

Students interested in tutoring English/Writing:

The Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student in English Composition II; those can help with technical writing and/or creative writing are preferred.

Peer Tutors in English/Writing must have taken English Composition II (ENG-102) or higher-level English/Writing at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.

Students interested in tutoring Mathematics:

The Peer Tutor in Mathematics should be able to assist any student up through college algebra; those who can help students with trigonometry, calculus, and/or statistics are preferred.

Peer Tutors in Mathematics must have taken college algebra (MAT-158) or higher-level mathematics at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.

Students interested in tutoring Physics:

The Peer Tutor in physics should be able to assist any student up through general physics I; those who can help students with general physics II and/or engineering physics I & II are preferred.

Peer Tutors in physics must have taken general physics I (PHY-150) or higher-level physics at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.

Scheduling:

Work hours must not conflict with students' academic schedules. Weekday availability is required, with hours from morning through evening. Schedule is flexible and subject to availability, averaging 10-15 hours per week. Tutors will have a set schedule for the semester in the EXCELerator, but may be asked to work in support of additional EXCELerator events, as the student's schedule allows, so long as it does not conflict with the student's schedule.

Length of Employment:

Positions are offered on a term-by-term basis aligned with academic semesters, with the possibility of renewal. Openings are available in spring, summer, and fall semesters.
