Job summary

Florida Memorial University is seeking a Peer Tutor to assist students with course concepts and lab duties in the Skills Lab. You will review material, discuss solving strategies, and provide motivating feedback to help students build confidence and master skills.

You will also assist with basic computer questions and help maintain lab order, security, and inventory while following FMU policies. This on-campus role fosters teamwork and professional growth.

Qualifications

  • Must be matriculating toward a degree at Florida Memorial University.
  • Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher.
  • Must be patient and have a strong desire to help students.
  • Ability to speak in front of groups and work in teams.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students by providing tutoring in the subject area for which qualified.
  • Review class material with students and discuss strategies or problems.

  • Assess students’ progress during tutoring sessions.

Job description

Peer Tutors assist students in learning concepts and skills related to course-based learning. Peer Tutors are an essential part of the Academic Affairs mission to retain students through formal peer interactions in the University’s academic safety net.Essential Functions:Assist students by providing tutoring in the subject area for which he/she is qualified.Review class material with students by discussing strategies and working solutions to problems or reviewing other assignments.Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.Assess students’ progress throughout tutoring sessions.Serve as a collaborative member of the DASS team.Attend all required orientation session, trainings, meetings, and evaluation-related Peer Tutor duties.Assist all users in the Skills Lab by answering any questions they may have, researching information or using online helpEnsure the security of the lab (may sometimes include the opening and closing of the lab)Maintain awareness of all inventory and supplies and prevent theft or destruction of hardware and software.Maintain the cleanliness and overall appearance of the lab.Aid students with computer-type questions regarding applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.Report all hardware/software problems to the staff or FMU IT Helpdesk to ensure quick resolution and maintenance.Adhere to all policies and procedures as stated in the Florida Memorial University Student Handbook and those issued by Information Technology.Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Report to work in a timely manner utilizing the log-in and log-out system.Work independently or collaborativelyMaintain order in the lab at all times.Demonstrate a courteous and willing disposition at all times.Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and have the ability to deal effectively with all users, including students, faculty, staff, and administrative officers.Effectively manage a frequently changing workload and work independently.Be able to deal with situations in a calm, professional manner, and perform functions and dutiesAbility to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.Moderate physical activity.
