Job Description

Student Assistance Program (SAP) Counselor Needed

Location: Shelburne Community School

This position will remain open until filled. However, applications received within the first seven days of posting will receive priority consideration. Internal candidates will also be prioritized over external applicants during this initial seven-day window.

Shelburne Community School (SCS) is seeking a dedicated and qualified Student Assistance Program (SAP) Counselor to provide essential school-based services. This vital role focuses on supporting the well-being and academic success of adolescents by addressing issues related to substance use/abuse, stress, challenging family systems, peers, and personal or school adjustments. The SAP counselor implements comprehensive prevention, education, screening, intervention, and referral services while fostering a supportive atmosphere for student recovery.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide intervention and confidential screening for students struggling with substance use/abuse, stress, and relational issues.
  • Offer individual and group counseling sessions on effective techniques for managing stress, peer and family relationships, and substance use issues.
  • Deliver educational services and training to staff and the community on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) prevention.
  • Support school counselors with teaching weekly Skills for Life classes across grades 5–8.
  • Screen and assess adolescents to make effective internal and external referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Provide case management and re-integration support for students entering and returning from substance abuse treatment.
  • Actively participate in student support teams and maintain strong working relationships with outside agencies.
  • Maintain strict client confidentiality in accordance with federal law (42 CFR Part 2).

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

  • Familiarity with substance abuse prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery methods, alongside a strong working knowledge of adolescent mental health.
  • Preferred SAP Counselor Certification, CADC/LADC licensure, or a valid Vermont Professional Educator's License.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to relate effectively to children, adolescents, parents, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to manage stress, resolve conflicts, handle crisis situations, and exercise sound independent judgment.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and data-informed problem-solving.
