Job summary

Parkside Middle School in Manchester, NH seeks a Student Assistance Program Counselor to identify and assist students facing personal or substance-related challenges, and to run short-term counseling and support groups.

The role emphasizes collaboration with district SAP coordinators, confidentiality, and community referrals to help students stay engaged in school. Start date is immediate; grant-funded with MEA contract terms.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or Human Services required.
  • NH Department of Education School Counselor or School Social Worker Certification preferred.
  • LADAC Certification (Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor) an asset.
  • BA degree in related field with direct experience relevant to the position.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and help students with personal, family, or substance use issues impacting school performance.
  • Create and establish support groups or provide short-term counseling.
  • Collaborate with SAP Coordinators to promote district consistency.
  • Develop policies around students’ alcohol and/or other drug violations.
  • Develop prevention/education activities for students, staff and administration.
  • Uphold confidentiality as required by state and federal laws.
  • Provide counseling/referral services for students violating the chemical use policy.
  • Coordinate with public/private agencies for student referrals.
  • Support reentry plans for students returning after inpatient treatment.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • SAPs must possess at least one of the following (one of first three is required for Title IV funding)

o NH Department of Education School Counselor or School Social Worker Certification
o NH Department of Health and Human Services LADAC Certification (Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor)
o Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or Human Services.
o Or, combination of BA degree in related field and direct experience relevant to the position.

  • Must have knowledge and experience with short term counseling techniques, facilitating groups and adolescent substance abuse counseling.
  • Have the ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgement in implementing programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, faculty, administrators, outside agencies, and the general public.


Specific Core Function:
To identify and help students who may be experiencing personal, family, and/or alcohol or other drug problems which may be interfering with their ability to perform at school. Create and establish support groups or implement short term counseling to help students cope with stressful events in their lives. Collaborate with other SAP Coordinators to promote consistency within the district. Work with school administration to develop clear policies around students’ alcohol and/or other drug violations.

Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Develop prevention/education activities for students, administration, faculty, and staff regarding the purpose and structure of the Student Assistance Program to assure outreach to those in need.
  • Uphold confidentiality as specified in state (R.S.A. 318-B:12-A) and Federal (42 C.F.R.) laws.
  • Identify, assess, and provide early intervention and referral services for students who are experiencing problems related to:

Alcohol and/or other drug use
Concerns about a family member’s alcohol and/or other drug use
Inability to communicate effectively with family members or peers
Depression, anger, loss, or other adolescent adjustment issues

  • Provide required counseling and/or referral services for students who are in violation of the chemical use policy as stated in the Manchester School District Code of Conduct.
  • Work with public and private drug and alcohol agencies, organizations and professional personnel in referring students with problems related to alcohol and/or other drug abuse.
  • Consult with administration, guidance counselors, and families to develop and implement reentry plans for students returning to school following inpatient treatment.
  • Provide in-service training and/or coordinate the training for teachers in the school.
  • Student Assistance Program Coordinator
  • Establish effective working relationships with other institutions and agencies in the City and State in order to maintain communication and cooperation between them and the school.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities and attends appropriate professional meetings.

Specified Length/Hours of Position:
This is an affiliated (MEA) position under the Teacher Association negotiated contract, following the school calendar with additional workshop days. This is a grant funded position contingent on continued funding.
