Job summary

Purdue University in Indianapolis is seeking tutors to help students learn how to solve problems independently, aid students in utilization of resources, and exemplify the behavior of a successful Purdue student. Tutors will provide support for College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus I, and Calculus II, and other courses during drop-in hours, including some Sunday afternoons or weekday evenings.

Advanced/Lead tutors may oversee the smooth operation of the drop-in tutor center, ensure other tutors

Qualifications

  • Purdue student studying in Indianapolis
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • A- or higher in MA 261 Multivariable Calculus
  • B+ or higher in at least ONE advanced designation: CHEM 11510/11610 or CS 159 or MA262/MA265/MA266/MA303/MA351 or PHYS 172/272 or STAT 301/350
  • Fluent understanding of College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus (single and multivariable)
  • Chemistry: General Chemistry
  • Computer Science: Programming for Engineers
  • Mathematics: Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations
  • Physics: General Physics, Modern mechanics, Electricity and Magnetic Interactions
  • Statistics: Elementary Statistical Methods, Intro to Statistics
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate a responsible and professional disposition to perform leadership tasks
  • Be willing to commit to the position for at least one full semester
  • Be available for team trainings throughout the year (evenings possible)
  • Be in good academic and judicial standing at Purdue University
  • Possess a positive attitude and passion for helping others

Responsibilities

  • Provide student support in standard and advanced mathematics/science courses through drop-in tutoring sessions during tutor-specified operating hours in ET 003 at Purdue University in Indianapolis.
  • All tutoring is in-person.
  • Present practice exercises to students and facilitate individual/small group discussion of solution options
  • Examine and identify potential improvements on existing student work
  • Maintain personal understanding of course concepts and topics to best facilitate learning
  • Identify appropriate study resources and practices and present recommendations
  • Engage in ongoing professional development including trainings, supervisor check-ins, and team meetings
  • Perform a leadership role in the operation of the drop-in tutor center during designated times
  • Ensure other tutors are performing duties appropriately and address difficulties
  • Monitor the operation of the sign-in kiosk and ensure students swipe in
  • Open/close the drop-in tutor center on designated days
  • Communicate any larger issues with the center director promptly

Job description

Tutors will assist students in learning how to solve problems independently, aid students in utilization of appropriate resources to further their understanding of mathematical/scientific concepts, and exemplify the behavior of a successful Purdue student. Tutors will provide support and encouragement for students in College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus I, and Calculus II, as well as other courses in their designated subject. All tutors are expected to assist students on a drop-in basis during their indicated working hours (which may include Sunday afternoons or weekday evenings) and foster a productive academic atmosphere. Additionally, Advanced/Lead tutors may be asked to oversee the smooth operation of the drop-in tutor center. Approx 5-10 hrs/week.

Required Qualifications
  • Purdue student studying in Indianapolis
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0
  • Achieved an A- or higher in the Purdue MA 261 Multivariable Calculus course AND
  • Achieved a B+ or higher in at least ONE of the following advanced designations:
  • Chemistry: CHEM 11510 and/or CHEM 11610 (or equivalents)
  • Computer Science: CS 159 (or equivalents)
  • Mathematics: At least TWO of MA262, MA265, MA266, MA303, MA351(or equivalents)
  • Physics: PHYS 172 and/or PHYS 272 (or equivalents)
  • Statistics: STAT 301 and/or STAT 350 (or equivalents)
  • A fluent understanding of College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus (single and multivariable), as well as the material pertaining to their advanced subject designation
  • Chemistry: General Chemistry
  • Computer Science: Programming for Engineers
