Job summary

Benesch in Illinois is seeking a Structural Project Engineer to work on bridges in the Chicago area. The role requires a Civil Engineering degree, a PE license is preferred, and licensure progression toward Illinois SE is expected.

You will collaborate with a team for analysis, inspection, load rating, and design tasks. The position offers a hybrid schedule (three days in the Chicago office, two days remote) with a focus on quality design and client outcomes.

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline required. MS in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis or related discipline preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review structural and geometric calculations for bridge rehabilitation and design projects.
  • Prepare and review finite element analysis models.
  • Prepare and review bridge load rating reports to DOT standards.
  • Prepare, compile and review plans, specifications, cost estimates and pay items in accordance with DOT standards.
  • Assume responsibility for assigned design calculation files and plans, assuring adequate independent QC reviews on that work.
  • Coordinate the above tasks with the Project/ Technical Manager.

Structural Project Engineer

Our Illinois division is hiring a Structural Project Engineer to work on complex projects in our Chicago, IL, office. The ideal candidate for this role will hold a valid license as a Professional Engineer and be working toward-or has obtained-their Structural Engineer license in Illinois. They will collaborate with a team of professionals, focusing on the analysis, inspection, load rating, and design of bridge structures.

Location

This position provides a flexible work schedule, with three days working from the Chicago, IL office and two days remotely.

The Impact You Will Have

What We Are Looking For
  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline required. MS in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis or related discipline preferred.

  • PE License preferred.

  • SE License in Illinois or the ability and plan to obtain.

  • Minimum of 5 years of bridge inspection, analysis, load rating and/or design experience.

  • Successful completion of one or more of the following FHWA-NHI courses is preferred but not required:

    • Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges
    • Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges
  • Experience working with IDOT, CDOT, ISTHA and/or Chicagoland local agencies preferred.

  • Strong communication and client relation skills.

  • Progressive experience with developing design drawings and utilizing MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.

  • Strong organization and leadership skills with a track record for adhering to design budgets and schedules.

  • Ability to perform complex analysis and design.

  • Ability to assemble a complete design package for assigned elements or projects.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the State of Illinois Pay Transparency Act, Illinois Pay Transparency Law. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on numerous factors, including but not limited to individual education, qualifications, prior work experience, and geographic location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary, overtime, and bonuses.

$104,000—$124,000 USD
