Job description

Location: Austin, TX, 100% onsite requirement

Compensation: $135,000-$165,000

Relocation: Comprehensive relocation assistance will be provided for non-locals.

About the Opportunity

We are supporting a rapidly scaling data center company that is hiring a Designer & Detailer covering mechanical and structural into its Modular team.

This team designs and industrializes factory-built data center units, turning first-of-a-kind designs into repeatable products the factory can build again and again. The business delivers gigawatt-scale capacity in months rather than years, and that only works if the drawing package is good enough for a shop to build from without picking up the phone.

That is the job. You will take modular designs from engineering concept through to fabrication-ready packages, detailing the structures, skids and piping systems inside each unit down to the weld and bolt level.

The standards side matters as much as the output. You will build and enforce the modeling standards, part libraries and templates that make every next unit faster to detail and harder to get wrong.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce the detailed mechanical and structural models and drawings the factory builds from, covering structures, skids, piping and assemblies with nothing left to interpretation
  • Detail steel and mechanical systems to fabrication level, including connections, penetrations, pipe spools and BOM-linked parts, complete enough that a fitter never has to guess
  • Turn engineering changes into updated, released drawing packages in days rather than weeks, with clean revision tracking throughout
  • Own model hygiene by building and enforcing the standards, libraries and templates that make each subsequent unit quicker to detail
  • Absorb rapid engineering changes across in-flight units without losing revision control or slowing the factory
  • Take designs from engineering concept to fabrication-ready package that a shop can build without a phone call
What We're Looking For
  • Experience detailing for fabrication, covering structural steel, skids, piping or modular assemblies, gained in a fab shop, skid builder or modular manufacturing environment
  • Ability to produce drawing packages that shops build from without calling, carrying the weld symbols, bolt callouts and dimensions a fitter actually needs
  • Experience modeling to standards with genuine library discipline, keeping parts, templates and naming conventions clean under pressure
  • Ability to handle revision storms without version chaos, so the released package is always the right one when engineering changes land
  • Practical understanding of how things get made, including welds, bends, tolerances and the clearances fabricators need to fit up, weld out and inspect
  • Awareness of what gets red-lined when it is missing, and detailing habits that have changed as a result
  • Strong understanding of how detailing decisions affect buildability, procurement and fabrication time
  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment where decisions often need to be made quickly
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to resolve queries from the shop floor clearly and quickly

The above is a starting point rather than a checklist. If you do not fit the role exactly but can point to where you would, that is worth a conversation.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following would be particularly valuable:

  • Tekla Structures or Advance Steel
  • Plant and BIM modeling (Revit or Plant 3D)
  • AWS weld symbols and AISC detailing standards
  • BIM coordination
  • Modular or prefabricated manufacturing
  • Skid building and heavy fabrication
  • High-growth or startup environments
The Human

This role is best suited to a detailer who takes pride in a package nobody has to ring up about.

You should enjoy being close to production, talking directly with the people building the product and solving problems as they happen rather than reviewing them weeks later from behind a desk.

You do not need to have come from a data center background.

What matters is that you understand your technical area, can work effectively in a manufacturing environment and are comfortable taking ownership of problems from identification through resolution.

The environment is fast-paced, highly ambitious and execution-focused. The successful candidate will play a critical role in turning engineering intent into a package the factory can build from as the operation scales.
