Job summary

Kiewit Nuclear Solutions is seeking a Structural Engineer Intern in Oak Ridge, TN or Lenexa, KS. You will support senior engineers by applying design standards, preparing sketches, and performing basic calculations to contribute to project success.

This internship offers exposure to structural analysis tools and drafting workflows, with training and development in a nuclear-focused environment under a leading energy/engineering firm.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in civil or architectural engineering (with a structural emphasis) from an ABET-accredited college or university.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred.
• Completion of fundamental structural analysis course, including computer applications.
• Completion of a strength of materials course covering statics and dynamics.
• Completion of fundamentals of steel design and/or concrete design courses.
• Proficiency with basic spreadsheet, database, and word processing programs.
• Familiarity with basic structural analysis software, engineering software, and CADD software for reviewing drafters' work.
• Experience with SAP2000, Mathcad, and Navisworks is advantageous.
• Must be a US citizen with documentation for badge access.
• Pass a security questionnaire and background check appropriate to position duties.

Responsibilities

• Work closely under supervision by a more experienced engineer.
• Develop familiarity with departmental design standards, applicable structural engineering codes and Kiewit policies, guidelines, and standards.
• Adhere to Kiewit Nuclear Solution’s quality program requirements and objectives.
• Prepare basic engineering calculations and follow standard methods and principles.
• Prepare basic design sketches and drawings for drafting and incorporation into final plans.
• Calculate cost and quantity estimates for project based on data analysis.
• Assist in checking calculations, drawings, and documents using established guidelines.
• May inspect construction sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to drawings and specs.
• Review vendor drawings for structural accuracy and construction materials.
• Communicate with other disciplines to coordinate design interfacing issues.
