Job summary

Northrop Grumman in Promontory, UT is seeking a Structural Engineer – Level 2 to analyze and develop structural specifications for rocket propulsion components. You will apply finite element methods and classic techniques to assess integrity, durability, and design allowables, collaborating with design, quality, safety, and materials teams.

The role uses NX, ANSYS, and ABAQUS to model structures, perform testing characterization, and prepare reports for internal reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering with 2 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 0 years of professional experience.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance.
  • FE analysis experience with MS in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering - Emphasis in metal structures, and solid mechanics or finite element theory.
  • Familiarity of design and modeling software (NX).
  • Strong and demonstrated communication, planning, project management and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the structural integrity of rocket propulsion systems and related components using traditional closed form methods as well as finite element techniques.
  • Plan and oversee material characterization testing of various materials used in the design of rockets.
  • Reduce structural characterization test data into analysis input properties and material capability properties.
  • Prepare reports and memos documenting structural assessment activities and results.
  • Prepare and make presentations summarizing structural assessment/analysis results for internal review boards and external customers.
  • Perform assessment and develop disposition of discrepant hardware and hardware anomalies.
  • Interact with design and development teams to support innovative and creative design solutions that meet rocket motor requirements (technical, cost, schedule).
  • Other duties as assigned.
