Job summary

GPI is seeking an Entry-Level Bridge Engineer to join our transportation team in Portland, ME. You will assist with the design, inspection, and rehabilitation of bridges and related structures, gaining hands-on experience across analysis, calculations, and fieldwork.

You will work with experienced engineers on projects that cover planning through construction, using AutoCAD, MicroStation, and other software.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited civil engineering degree with a structural/transportation focus.
  • EIT certification or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
  • Internship or co-op in structural/bridge/transportation engineering is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO LRFD and transportation standards preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in structural analysis and design of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other transportation-related structures.
  • Perform calculations and develop design plans, specs, and documents under guidance of senior engineers.
  • Support bridge inspections and condition assessments in line with state and federal requirements.
  • Participate in field investigations, data collection, and construction site visits.
  • Assist with load ratings, rehabilitation studies, and bridge replacement projects.
  • Utilize engineering software to prepare designs, models, and technical reports.
  • Coordinate with project managers, clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and inspection reports.
  • Assist in permit applications and engineering studies.
  • Maintain project documentation and assist with schedules and budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with codes, standards, and QC procedures.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural or transportation focus from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire preferred.
  • Internship or co-op experience in structural, bridge, or transportation engineering is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of structural analysis and bridge design principles.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and transportation engineering standards preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, OpenBridge, LEAP Bridge, SAP2000, or similar engineering software is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in both office and field environments.
  • Willingness to perform field inspections, including climbing ladders, walking uneven terrain, and working near active traffic.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Coursework or experience in structural analysis, steel design, reinforced concrete design, and bridge engineering.
  • Familiarity with DOT standards and transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Desire to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
Requirements
  • Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
  • Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
  • Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
  • Able to climb and leave a ladder to a platform varying from 6' to 20'
  • Able to wear and operate personal fall arresting apparatus, and work at a height of 6' or higher
  • Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
  • Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds
