Position Summary:
The Mass Timber Engineer serves as a strong technical resource to the structural mass timber division at Sterling. The Mass Timber Engineer provides technical guidance, engineering support, preconstruction planning and project assistance working across teams, from design to manufacturing and construction, to achieve success for our mass timber products across a wide range of projects. This role will focus on building technical and engineering resources, managing estimating, providing value engineering for projects at all stages, and product research and development to expand our offerings.
Essential Functions:
- Review projects for constructability and balance in-house fabrication limitations and requirements with design intent, engineering and installation needs.
- Facilitate optimization and support value engineering building designs for Sterling CLT integration through direct project support and general R&D.
- Coordinate with National Account Managers and Senior Estimator to determine design requirements and develop plans for design assist and shop drawing delivery efforts of incoming projects.
- Manage and support estimating workload with Senior Estimator to ensure project proposals are delivered on time, accurately and completely.
- Work with National Account Managers to build and enact action plans toward successful project proposals, including providing engineering narratives and optioneering.
- Build delegated engineering scopes and support consulting engineering teams alongside PM and Design teams.
- Serve as an engineering resource for complex design assist activity, participating in and facilitating work sessions for design development and contract documentation.
- Support product line development efforts, focusing on engineering efficiencies, prefab and hybrid assemblies, modular housing solutions, and construction best practices.
- Work with Director of Engineering to build and maintain engineering span tables, standard connection details, rigging tables, and construction guidance.
- Provide mentorship to Mass Timber and Fabrication Designers to help develop team technical knowledge base.
- Support consistent and collaborative work with academia, complementary product manufacturers (fasteners, rigging, glulam…) and other industry partners to build innovative solutions.
- Assist in maintaining product and sustainability certifications such as ANSI PRG-320, ICC-ES Product Report, Environmental Product Declarations and DECLARE Labels.
- Serve on relevant industry technical committees for code improvements, standards, such as AWC, ANSI PRG-320, ASTM.
- Work with Director of Engineering to identify and accelerate special projects.
- Consistently demonstrate commitment and support for the Sterling vision, mission, policies and procedures.
- Performs work in compliance with work instructions and policies as outlined by management.
- Foster a culture of innovation, teamwork, customer-centricity, and compliance.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5-10 years of direct experience in engineering and design of buildings, mass timber, engineered wood products and steel experience a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to detail and review connection design.
- Engineering Degree or equivalent.
- Construction administration, field experience and responding to contractor RFIs.
- Professional designation preferred (P.E. or S.E.).
- Strong technical skillset in building codes and common structural building materials.
Supervisory Responsibility: This position has supervisory responsibilities overseeing a Senior Estimator.
Travel Requirements: Overnight travel may be required up to 15%.
Salaried: Full-time annual salary range is $100,000 - $125,000 dependent upon experience, and qualifications.
