This position will lead structural engineering assignments involving highway bridges and miscellaneous transportation structures. The engineer will develop calculations, plans, specifications, and schedules while coordinating with clients, contractors, subconsultants, municipalities, utility companies, and regulatory agencies.
The ideal candidate has experience working on FDOT or similar state transportation agency projects and can manage assignments from initial concept through final design and construction. This role also provides opportunities to mentor junior engineers, participate in technical meetings, and contribute to long-term client relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage structural engineering assignments for transportation infrastructure projects
- Lead the design of highway bridges and miscellaneous transportation structures
- Develop structural design concepts, criteria, calculations, plans, drawings, specifications, and schedules
- Represent the engineering team during technical meetings with clients, contractors, agencies, municipalities, and other project stakeholders
- Serve as a primary client contact and maintain clear communication throughout each project
- Coordinate structural work with roadway, drainage, geotechnical, utility, and other engineering disciplines
- Manage subconsultants and obtain the technical information required to advance project deliverables
- Prepare and review contract documents, construction plans, technical specifications, permit applications, and approval packages
- Support bridge inspections, structural evaluations, rehabilitation recommendations, and maintenance-related assignments
- Provide bid-phase assistance, respond to RFIs, and perform post-design engineering services during construction
- Evaluate field conditions and make sound recommendations regarding design changes
- Monitor project scope, schedules, budgets, quality, and technical deliverables
- Manage multiple assignments while adapting to changing project conditions and deadlines
- Review the work of junior engineers and designers
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and professional development support to junior staff
- Maintain compliance with applicable FDOT requirements, design standards, codes, and quality-control procedures
Required Experience
- At least 5 years of structural engineering experience involving transportation infrastructure
- Previous experience working on FDOT or another state Department of Transportation project
- Demonstrated bridge or miscellaneous transportation structures design experience
- Experience preparing engineering calculations, construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents
- Ability to manage structural design tasks or multidisciplinary engineering assignments
- Experience coordinating with clients, contractors, subconsultants, and government agencies
- Ability to review technical work and provide guidance to junior team members
- Strong understanding of structural engineering principles, design codes, standards, and industry procedures
- Ability to manage multiple projects and make independent technical decisions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
- Active Professional Engineer license in the State of Florida
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or Civil 3D
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Strong written, verbal, organizational, and client-facing communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

- Experience leading complex, multidisciplinary transportation projects
- Extensive FDOT bridge design or transportation structures experience
- Experience with bridge inspection, rehabilitation, maintenance, or post-design construction services
- MicroStation experience
- Mathcad experience
- Experience mentoring engineers, designers, or technical staff
- Familiarity with FDOT design manuals, specifications, production standards, and project-delivery procedures
