Job summary

AEC Resources in Minnesota is seeking a Structural Engineer to evaluate existing buildings, blending field investigations with desk-based analysis and design. You will develop repair and restoration concepts, prepare construction documents, and support construction-phase services while interacting with clients and project stakeholders.

Ideal candidates have a Civil/Structural Eng degree, 2–8 years in buildings, PE or FE in progress, and experience with AutoCAD or Revit.

Qualifications

• 2–8 years of structural engineering experience related to buildings (construction, design, or evaluation).
• PE license or FE exam in progress or ability to sit for FE soon; familiarity with building systems (structure, envelope, foundations, roofs).

This position focuses on existing buildings, combining hands-on field investigation with analytical engineering, repair design, and client-facing problem solving. This role typically balances field investigation and desk-based analysis/design, offering variety without constant travel.

Your Focus Areas:

You’ll support structural engineering building evaluation and restoration efforts across a wide range of project types including:

• Assessing existing building conditions and performance
• Investigating structural and enclosure-related issues
• Evaluating materials, assemblies, and construction quality
• Developing repair and restoration concepts and construction documents
• Supporting construction-phase services and observations
• Preparing technical reports that clearly explain findings and recommendations
• Interacting directly with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders

A typical week is a blend of field and office work. You may spend time on-site documenting existing building conditions, then shift to reviewing drawings and construction history to understand how systems were originally designed and built. From there, you’ll analyze how materials and assemblies have performed over time, collaborate with senior engineers to develop practical repair strategies, and document your findings in clear, professional reports. You’ll also observe restoration or repair work in progress, gaining firsthand insight into how designs are implemented in the field.

Your Background:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
• 2–8 years of structural engineering experience connected to buildings (construction, design, or evaluation)
• Professional Engineer (PE), or EIT obtained, or ability to sit for the FE exam in the near future
• Familiarity with building systems (structure, envelope, foundations, roofs, etc.)
• Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit
