Job summary

Sedgman USA is seeking a Structural Designer for our Phoenix, Arizona office. The role focuses on creating 2D and 3D models of steel and concrete structures used in mining, coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams, and ensuring safety and code compliance.

The designer will translate concepts into actionable plans, develop designs for foundations and steelwork, and support EPCM projects throughout the design process. Sedgman offers growth and benefits with a global platform.

Qualifications

  • Associate Diploma in CAD or equivalent training.
  • 5–7 years' experience in structural drafting for mining or engineering.
  • Ability to translate concepts into 3D designs.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD 3D; Revit, Navisworks or Tekla is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of steel connections, concrete foundations, and codes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and error-free drawings.
  • MS Office Suite proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Produce accurate detailed structural drawings (plans, elevations, sections) and 3D models using Revit, AutoCAD, or Tekla Structures.
  • Develop detailed designs for structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, and foundations for mining infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with mechanical and electrical teams to resolve conflicts; perform clash detection in Navisworks.
  • Ensure designs comply with mining safety codes and QA/QC requirements.
  • Review vendor drawings and conduct field visits to verify measurements and support construction activities.
  • Prepare BOMs and compute data for fabrication and cost estimation.
  • Maintain drawing lists and percentage complete status; reflect Sedgman standards.

Job description

Sedgman USA is looking for a Structural Designerto join our team in our Phoenix, Arizona office. The ideal candidate will have experience in creating 2D and 3D models of steel and concrete structures used in mining (such as conveyor galleries, crusher stations and bunker structures).

The Structural Designer translates conceptual designs from structural engineers into actionable technical plans that meet safety standards, structural engineering principles, and industry codes. They will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams (mechanical, civil, and electrical) on EPCM projects and will beinvolved in the entire design process.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Produce accurate detailed structural drawings (plans, elevations, sections) and 3D models using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, or Tekla Structures.

  • Develop detailed designs for structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, and foundations for both underground and surface mining infrastructure.

  • Coordinate with mechanical and electrical teams to resolve conflicts, performing clash detection of models in software like Navisworks.

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable mining safety codes, regional building codes, and company quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) requirements.

  • Review vendor equipment drawings and conduct field visits to verify measurements, assess existing structures, or support construction activities.

  • Prepare bills of materials (BOM), list structural components, and compute engineering data for fabrication and cost estimation.

  • Focus on meeting expectations for schedule, quality and client satisfaction.

  • Participate in the review of designs and advise on technical drafting difficulties or compliance requirements as appropriate

  • Comply with the Change Management process for engineering design

  • Upkeep of drawing list and percentage complete status

  • Understand Sedgman standard specifications and typical/standard drawings to reflect current industry standards

About You
  • Associate Diploma in CAD / or any other formal training certificates

  • Must have 5 – 7 years’ experience instructural drafting, with specific experience in the mining industry, and/or engineering consulting firm.

  • Ability to take an engineering concept and convert it into a 3D design

  • High proficiency in AutoCAD 3D is essential; experience with Autodesk Revit, Navisworks or Tekla Structures considered an asset.

  • Strong understanding of steel connection detailing, concrete foundations, and structural steel standards.

  • Strong attention to detail; Exceptional precision in checking drawings for errors before

  • Skills in MS Office Suite
