Job description

Northwell Health’s Department of Neurology is seeking a full-time physician leader to serve as Stroke Medical Director for our Central and Eastern regions. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a high-acuity stroke program supported by a highly experienced team within New York State’s largest healthcare provider.

About the Program:

Northwell Health boasts a vast network of 16 New York State-designated stroke centers, ensuring cutting-edge research and treatment advances reach our patients. Our stroke centers are committed to excellence, offering comprehensive care through a multidisciplinary team of physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, technicians, and support staff. We actively train all stroke team members and educate EMTs to rapidly identify and respond to stroke symptoms, enabling faster treatment and improved patient outcomes.

At Northwell Health’s Institute for Neurology, we have three hospitals ranked in the top 50 in the U.S News & World Report (North Shore University Hospital being the highest at #15 in the nation) and the nation’s most extensive system of comprehensive stroke centers with 4 Comprehensive Stroke Programs, 11 Primary Stroke Centers, and a Thrombectomy-Capable Center.

About the Department:

The Department of Neurology has seen tremendous growth over the past five years across all regions, with the goal of providing comprehensive, integrated health care and wellness services. Inclusion within the service line offers the opportunity to connect with a large group of neurologists, academic, teaching, world class grand rounds, conferences and the ability to discuss and share cases with experts in every subspecialty. The department brings together the vast resources of Northwell Health and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell to provide state-of-the-art care while contributing to advances in technology, education and research.

About the Role:

Reporting to the Department Chair, you will direct and establish best practices for the hospital stroke program. As a key member of the hospital leadership team, you will:

  • Lead the Stroke Program Team and participate in Neurology Service Line meetings
  • Serve as a liaison between administration and the stroke team, regularly reporting to Executive and Health System leadership
  • Identify opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction and quality of care, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services
  • Monitor quality data and lead process improvement initiatives to meet and exceed quality standards
  • Collaborate with service-line leadership to expand and implement best practices in stroke care
  • Oversee physician recruitment, mentorship, and supervision
  • Drive program development, strategic planning, and process improvement initiatives
  • Manage clinical, quality, operational, and financial performance

Candidate Qualifications:

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • M.D. Degree from an accredited institution (ACGME or foreign program that is similarly appropriately accredited)
  • Completion of Neurology residency and Stroke/Vascular fellowship
  • Must be Board Certified
  • Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a physician in the State of New York
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience demonstrating exceptional leadership skills
