Street Maintenance Worker
Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Benefit Eligible, Union Position
Pay: $32.84 - $40.81 per hour, DOQ

We’re seeking a safety-focused, collaborative individual with a commitment to public service for our Street Maintenance Worker position. This position performs the inspection, maintenance, and repair of City streets, rights-of-ways, and signs. Responsibilities:
- Perform repairs to asphalt and gravel road surfaces including patching, overlays, and crack sealing using specialized equipment such as pavers, melters, distributors, and loader.
- Load and haul material for street maintenance and repair.
- Perform concrete curb and sidewalk repair and replacement using concrete saws, jack hammers, and specialized concrete raising equipment.
- Perform street cleaning, boulevard, ditch, and right-of-way cleaning, catch basin/storm sewer inlet and outlet maintenance and rough-cut mowing and tree trimming/removal.
- Perform snow and ice removal using trucks, loaders, and other specialized equipment.
- Perform minor vehicle, building, and grounds maintenance and participate in building constructions/refurbishment as assigned.
- Install, maintain, and replace street identification, traffic control signs, and pavement markings while maintaining and organizing records.
- Respond to emergency call outs after scheduled work hours and be available for extended workdays, call backs, and shift schedule changes.
- Adhere to and implement all safety rules, regulations, and practices including wearing appropriate safety equipment to protect the employee, operation, and the public.
- Understand and actively participate in work zone safety procedures and operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Duties:
- Performing other maintenance tasks while assisting other maintenance divisions as assigned including emergency situations or to balance seasonal workloads and schedules.
- Provide on-the-job direction and/or training to other employees as needed for certain job situations.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
- Three (3) years of experience in the operation of street maintenance, paving, snow plowing, and/or general construction equipment.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (Category 1 or 2) with air brake and tank endorsements.
- Valid Class A Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License (Interstate, Category 1 or 2) with air brake and tank endorsement within 180 days of hire.
- Perform all the essential position functions and meet the physical requirements of the position under the working conditions as described.
Knowledge of:
- Material, methods and techniques used in construction and maintenance activities.
- Occupational hazards of work and necessary job-related safety precautions.
Skills in:
- The use of all tools and equipment associated with street maintenance.
- The operation of vehicles/equipment used for street maintenance.
- Basic math and arithmetic.
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, understanding of GIS, data entry).
Ability to:
- Safely operate vehicles and equipment used for structural and operation street maintenance.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
- Understand and use equipment safely and to adhere to all safety practices and procedures.
- Handle stressful situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A graduate of a vocational school in heavy equipment operation, construction and maintenance methods, or related field.
- A graduate of the American Public Works Association-Minnesota Chapter Public Works Certificate Program and/or Leadership Academy.
- Five (5) years of experience in asphalt maintenance and repair.
- Five (5) years of experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of concrete, specifically curb and gutter, sidewalk, and miscellaneous flatwork.
Working Conditions and Hours:
Normal hours of work are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Hours of work may change depending on department needs. May include shift changes for the efficient operation of the division. FLSA non-exempt position.
