Job summary

City of Des Moines, IA is seeking an employee to perform maintenance and construction of roads and City facilities under immediate supervision. The role ensures roadways, sidewalks and drainage systems are safe, functional and well‑maintained.

Duties include breaking, tamping and finishing bituminous asphalt, operating light equipment, spreading gravel, removing snow, applying salt and de‑icing chemicals, and assisting in digging and resetting manhole covers.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• One year of road or construction experience is required.
• Iowa Class B CDL with tank endorsement is required; ability to operate vehicles with air brakes.

Responsibilities

• Breaks, tamp and finishes bituminous asphalt to provide even thickness.
• Runs a small roller over asphalt patches to obtain a smooth surface.
• Assists in construction tasks and operates simple pneumatic tools and air hammers.
• Spreads and tamp gravel to ensure safe road surfaces.
• Loads and unloads trucks manually or with equipment.
• Removes snow from streets and sidewalks using city equipment.
• Applies salt, anti-icing and de-icing chemicals to roads.
• Patches, repairs and seals holes in streets with hot asphalt.
• Trims brush along the right of way; assists in digging and resetting manhole covers.
• Operates dump trucks and similar equipment.

Upon immediate supervision, to perform maintenance and construction of roads and other City facilities. This role involves performing a variety of tasks to ensure roadways, sidewalks and drainage systems are safe, functional and well-maintained.

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
• One (1) year experience in road or other construction work.

• Possession of a valid Iowa Class B CDL with tank endorsement and allowing the operation of vehicles with airbrakes.
• Candidates for positions in this class must pass a pre-employment background check, physical examination and drug screen.
