Job summary

City of Des Moines seeks a maintenance worker to perform road and facility upkeep under immediate supervision. Tasks include breaking, tamping, and finishing asphalt, operating dump trucks and light equipment, spreading gravel, and removing snow when needed.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, at least one year of road construction experience, and possess a valid Iowa Class B CDL with tank endorsement and airbrakes.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• One year of experience in road or construction work is required.
• Candidates must pass a pre-employment background check, physical examination and drug screen.

Responsibilities

• Breaks, tamping and finishes bituminous asphalt to provide even thickness.
• Operates small roller over asphalt patches for a smooth surface.
• Assists in construction tasks and operates pneumatic tools and air hammers.
• Spreads and tamps gravel to ensure safe road surfaces.
• Loads and unloads trucks by hand or with equipment.
• Removes snow from streets and sidewalks using public works vehicles.
• Applies salt, anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
• Patches, repairs and seals holes in streets with hot asphalt.
• Trims brush along rights of way.
• Assists in digging and resetting manhole covers.
• Operates dump trucks and similar equipment.
