Job summary

State of Maine's Department of Labor - Bureau of Unemployment Compensation seeks an adjudicator to analyze complex UC cases, determine eligibility, and issue written decisions. This hybrid position requires at least one in-office day per week, with remote work after probation.

You will interview claimants, employers, and witnesses, apply Maine laws and regulations, and help prevent fraud while guiding appeals hearings and, if needed, court proceedings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and two years of public-contact experience with interviewing, data gathering, and analysis.
• Experience in adjudication, investigations, and unemployment law preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interview claimants, employers, and witnesses to determine eligibility and appropriate charging.
• Write clear decisions documenting UC determinations and charges.
• Evaluate investigative information to determine best course of action and protect state laws and funds.
• Explain laws, rules, and policies to claimants, employers, and the public.
• Investigate misrepresentation and fraudulent claims and prepare reports.
• Testify at hearings and in court to justify decisions.
• Plan, assign, and oversee staff and provide training to ensure compliance.
