Job summary

George Steel Fabricating, Inc. is seeking an Estimator to develop accurate cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects. You will quantify materials, calculate labor hours, and solicit supplier pricing to prepare competitive bids.

The role requires collaboration with Sales, Project Management, and Production to ensure bids are profitable and aligned with capabilities and AISC standards. Fast-paced bid environment with $1M–$15M projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
• 3–5 years of experience in structural steel fabrication, estimating, detailing, or related manufacturing.
• Familiarity with AISC and AWS standards.
• Experience with Tekla PowerFab or similar estimating software is highly desirable.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, ERP systems, and fabrication data reporting.

Responsibilities

• Examine drawings, specs and addenda to determine full scope of work.
• Perform quantity take-offs of structural steel, plates, and misc. metals using estimating software.
• Estimate fabrication and erection man-hours based on project complexity and shop capacity.
• Solicit quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, including erection contractors and material vendors.
• Evaluate vendor quotes for scope, pricing accuracy, and alignment with specs.
• Compile cost data into a formal proposal with defined scope inclusions/exclusions.
• Identify risks and account for them in pricing strategy.
• Collaborate with Project Managers to transition estimates into budgets post-award.
• Monitor steel pricing and availability to keep bids competitive.
• Assist sales in bid reviews with general contractors/owners.
