Job summary

Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking a Litigation Strategy Director, a senior leader responsible for strategy, standards, and professional development that keep SELC’s litigation among the best in the country.

This full-time, exempt role offers a hybrid work model with remote options up to two days per week and relocation reimbursement. Offices include Charlottesville, Richmond, Chapel Hill, and other SELC offices nationwide.

Qualifications

• Ten or more years of litigation experience, including substantial first-chair responsibility in complex civil litigation.
• Active license to practice law in one of SELC’s six states or Washington, D.C.
• Knowledge of administrative law, civil procedure, justiciability, remedies, and professional responsibility.
• Sound judgment in high-stakes litigation decisions, including filing, settlement, appeal, or alternate course.
• Record of developing litigators and coaching junior attorneys toward lead roles.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with clients, colleagues, and the broader legal community.
• Ability and willingness to travel to SELC offices and other locations as needed.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Chief Program Officer and other leaders to make litigation central to program plans and advocacy.
• Serve as SELC’s principal advisor on litigation strategy and significant filings.
• Approve novel or consequential litigation decisions and oversee Board updates.
• Anticipate developments affecting SELC’s work and advise on risks with General Counsel.
• Supervise attorneys and mentor litigators across SELC to build sound judgment and advocacy.
• Set priorities for litigation training and foster a culture of legal excellence and candor.
• Assess litigation capacity, advise on hiring for senior litigators, and maintain policies and systems.
• Coordinate strategy with national and regional partners and build relationships with clients, counsel, experts, and the legal community.
• Represent SELC’s litigation to donors, press, and the public with Communications and Development.
