Job summary

The Florida Legislature seeks a staff-level professional to assist the staff director in directing committee or unit staff by setting priorities, guiding research, and approving final reports, legislation, and correspondence. Responsibilities include supervising research projects, coordinating with agencies, overseeing staff, and preparing communications for Legislators and the public.

A bachelor's degree with extensive experience is required; advanced degrees may substitute for experience.

Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and six years of professional administrative, research, policy analysis, or program planning and evaluation experience.
• A master's degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of the required experience.
• A doctorate from an accredited college or university can substitute for two years of the required experience.
• Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Responsibilities

• Assist the staff director in managing committee staff activities in preparing legislation to solve problems identified by the committee and the public.
• Assist in supervising, planning, and directing the preparation of research projects and other major committee or unit documents.
• Coordinate and supervise committee staff on oversight of executive branch agencies within jurisdiction and investigate deviations from norms.
• Prepare or review written and oral communications in response to inquiries from Legislators, staff, and the public.
• Maintain expertise in committee subject areas and monitor significant changes and activities.
• Participate in formulating and implementing policies and procedures for the committee or unit.
