Job summary

UC San Diego’s Philosophy Department seeks a Financial Analyst 2 to manage the department’s financial administration, budget setting, and grant oversight. The role supports graduate programs and the new Self-Supporting BA/MA Plus One, ensuring revenues cover costs.

You will prepare reports, advise faculty and CAO, and coordinate with campus central offices. Strong analytical and communication skills, and experience with state, contract and grant funds, are essential.

Qualifications

• Experience in contract and grant proposal formats, preparation, submission and administration.
• Knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems; familiarity with university policies for contracts and grants.
• Understanding federal and non-federal agency requirements for sponsored research from proposal to closeout.
• Experience in fund accounting, cost analysis and audit procedures.
• Ability to project salary and indirect costs; understanding payroll and personnel regulations.
• Ability to analyze budgets, identify spending patterns and forecast expenditures.
• Ability to present information clearly in writing and verbally.
• Experience with campus central offices and cross-department collaboration.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial, payroll and personnel information.
• Adaptability, multi-tasking in a high-volume environment and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Manage financial administration for Philosophy funds and related programs (including Science Studies and budget).
• Prepare monthly fund balance reports and financial analyses for faculty and the CAO.
• Oversee contract and grant administration (pre- and post-award) and compliance with sponsor regulations.
• Coordinate graduate student funding (block grants, GSGEI allocations, TA/tuition support).
• Provide contract and grant administration for external graduate student fellowships and awards.
• Lead financial planning and oversight for the Self-Supporting BA/MA Plus One program to ensure sustainability.
• Serve as Departmental Security Administrator (DSA).
