Job summary

STRS Ohio is seeking a Director of Strategic Communications to lead the Executive/ Communications and Public Affairs team. The role directs messaging for members, employers, board members and media, ensuring accuracy, strategy and impact for STRS Ohio.

You will guide publications, policies and social media efforts, oversee research to shape narratives, and supervise a diverse communications staff. Strong writing, leadership and budgeting skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, political science, communications or public relations required.
• At least 10 years’ experience in communications; knowledge of the public pension or public agencies preferred.
• Supervisory experience required.
• Exceptional writing and communication skills across publications, speeches, web, video and social media.
• Ability to develop integrated, cost‑effective communication solutions addressing business challenges.

Responsibilities

• Lead communications staff and oversee development, coordination and delivery of materials for members, employers, board members, media and stakeholders.
• Plan, direct and facilitate STRS Ohio messaging and communication programs.
• Oversee publications and collaborate on communication policies and strategies.
• Direct market research, including surveys and focus groups, to develop strategic messaging and measures of effectiveness.
• Plan, write, edit, proofread and execute communications, campaigns and key messages.
• Collaborate with designers, print production and internal clients to coordinate approvals and mailing.
• Support social media strategy and monitoring in line with goals.
• Support media relations, news monitoring and content for websites and intranet.
• Direct and lead responses to inquiries, maintaining clear, coordinated messaging.
• Assist in developing annual department budget and present to STRS Board as needed.
