Job summary

Central Insurance is seeking an experienced Underwriter to manage a blended portfolio of small and middle market business within the Service Center to meet profitability goals. You will underwrite new business, renewals and endorsements, and align pricing with strategic guidelines.

Responsibilities include evaluating risk factors, maintaining state regulatory knowledge, and supporting agents and insureds with strong negotiation and communication.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and 2 years of underwriting
• Or 4 years of underwriting experience
• Preferred Commercial Lines underwriting experience
• Experience underwriting a variety of commercial lines accounts; premium sizes
• Certifications such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CRIS or other designations

Responsibilities

• Manages and underwrites an assigned blended portfolio of small and middle market business to achieve profitability
• Underwrite renewals, new business, and endorsements within the Service Center
• Evaluate risk factors, coverage needs, and pricing to align with guidelines
• Underwrite accounts countrywide with understanding of regional appetites and strategy
• Use negotiation and sales skills to support Account Consultant interactions with agents and insureds
• Select profitable new business through risk, coverage, and loss analysis
• Classify and price risks using underwriting judgement and tools
• Handle complex or larger accounts that may require reinsurance placement
• Monitor premium growth and perform territory/agency profitability analysis
• Identify opportunities for book improvement and work with Distribution
• Stay current on state/territory issues and regulations
• Develop and maintain relationships with agents; travel for agency visits as needed
• Communicate effectively, providing prompt and professional service
• Collaborate with internal teams (loss control, customer service, claims, marketing) on underwriting initiatives
• Maintain underwriting file documentation and pursue ongoing education and development
