Job summary

The City of Bell Gardens is seeking an at-will Maintenance Worker to perform semi-skilled labor across facilities, streets, sidewalks, signs, parks, and drainage systems. The role includes tending landscaping, operating a range of tools and equipment, and addressing maintenance needs in a dynamic city environment.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent, plus experience in graffiti removal, street maintenance, or landscaping.

  • Assist with concrete work, banner installation, restroom maintenance, and vehicle operation.

Job description

Applications will be reviewed on a continuous basis until vacancies are filled

Under the general supervision, this at-will position performs semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance and repair of public works facilities including streets, traffic systems, sidewalks, signs, parks, graffiti removal, storm drains, tree trimming and planting, and abatement of nuisances in the public right of way; identifies and repairs plumbing issues at various City facilities; performs related duties as required. Incumbent may be rotated though various crews on a regular basis and may be assigned to work nights, weekends, holidays, and special events.

Participates in the work of a park or street maintenance crew in operating power and hand tools, edging, and weeding lawns, flower beds, and other landscaped areas; cutting and planting sod; tree trimming; spraying of pesticides; spreading seeds and fertilizer; planting or removing flowers; operating, maintaining, and repairing in-ground sprinkler systems; cleaning sidewalks, parking areas, and other areas of leaves and other debris; removing trash; operating power mowers, blowers, sweepers, edger, sprayers and other equipment or vehicles; cleaning and repairing restrooms and park equipment; road repair, pour concrete; install seasonal street banners; repair plumbing issues at City facilities; and other duties as assigned.

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for successful job performance related to City maintenance. Typical combination includes high school graduation or equivalent and any experience in any of the following areas: 1) Graffiti Removal, 2) Street Maintenance, or 3) Landscaping. Satisfactory driving record (Original DMV H-6 print out required). Ability to speak Spanish highly desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must have knowledge of common tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance work; ground maintenance methods and techniques; trees, plants, flowers, and shrubs; operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in grounds and maintenance; grounds caretaking equipment operation and maintenance; basic safety precautions and procedures; traffic laws, and standards relating to the proper installation and maintenance of street signs and pavement makings. Must have ability to communicate in English, both oral and in writing; resolve plumbing issues. Must have skill in the operation of a variety of equipment and vehicles and use of hand and power tools.

LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATE(S):

Valid California Class C driver's licence.

Temporary / part-time employment is restricted to a certain number of hours within a 12-month period and does not qualify to receive City benefits except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory and requires an employee contribution of 7.5% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.

SELECTION PROCESS
