Job summary

The City of Suffolk is seeking a paraprofessional engineer to support the Public Works Department's Stormwater Management Program. You will perform field inspections, investigate illicit discharges, conduct screenings, and assist in data collection and reporting across stormwater facilities.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in science or related field, 2+ years of relevant experience, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework in science or related field; or equivalent experience (2+ years)
• Valid driver’s license required
• DEQ Erosion and Stormwater Inspector Certification to be acquired within 12 months of hire
• Virginia Boater’s License may be required
• Knowledge of civil engineering principles for stormwater facilities
• Ability to read and interpret plans, maps and engineering documents

Responsibilities

• Conduct field inspections of stormwater facilities and develop inspection reports
• Perform illicit discharge investigations and coordinate with other departments
• Conduct stormwater outfall screenings and prepare reports
• Perform field sampling and monitoring of stormwater runoff
• Assist with public outreach events and presentations
• Maintain department records and filing system; assist consultants, developers and the public
• Review plans for stormwater features and assist in erosion and stormwater inspections
• Provide support during emergency clean-up operations
• Prepare technical reports and testify as needed
