Job summary

The City of Richmond seeks an Environmental Compliance Inspector to enforce wastewater pretreatment and municipal stormwater regulations, inspect facilities, collect samples, and evaluate data in field and office settings.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 1–3 years of experience, possesses a California driver’s license, and can communicate regulatory requirements clearly to businesses and the public while collaborating with City staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field
• 1–3 years of related experience
• Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience

Responsibilities

• Inspect sanitary and storm sewer discharges from various sources (industrial, commercial, municipal).
• Perform routine physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological tests on samples.
• Investigate sources of illegal discharges entering the systems.
• Communicate violations and issue notices; attend court if necessary.
• Maintain inspection records and data in databases for tracking and reporting.
• Enforce Richmond Municipal Code and NPDES permits; coordinate public meetings and outreach.
• Receive and interpret laboratory data and apply results to regulatory requirements.
• Perform related duties as required.
