The Manager in Training is responsible for learning the duties of the Store Manager position and developing skills required for a Store Manager role. Primary responsibilities include driving outstanding sales results through effective sales techniques, building the team, building customer loyalty through world-class customer service, and leading execution of company standards. This position also promotes a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)

As a Manager in Training, you will observe and learn the following duties and skills required for a Store Manager role:

  • Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following all policies and procedures of Petsense by Tractor Supply.
  • Learn how to build the store team through hiring/staffing decisions, Team Member retention, managing the schedule and payroll, Team Member training and development, succession planning, and performance reviews and counseling.
  • Support selling initiatives (TEAM): Thank the Customer, Engage with the customer and/or pet, Advise on products or services, Make it Memorable.
  • Drive sales and profit through supporting top-line sales, merchandising initiatives, expense control, profit/loss management, and asset protection.
  • Grow the grooming business and ensure the safety and care of all pets in our store.
  • Increase brand awareness through local marketing events such as Pet Adoption, community fairs, or parades.
  • Learn to lead the execution of Petsense standards including store presentation, inventory management, freight, pricing/promotions, loss prevention, and daily task delegation.
  • Perform duties such as handling customer complaints, opening and closing procedures, banking deposits, operating cash registers, and supervising cash handling.
  • Be comfortable working with small animals and uphold all safety policies for animal care.
  • Ensure accurate reconciliation of cash drawers and vaults daily.
  • Maintain regular attendance, work scheduled shifts, and be flexible with hours including nights and weekends.
  • Train on processing paperwork, sales forecasting, payroll analysis, budgeting, and team evaluations.
  • Manage inventory changes, budgeting, and store audits.
  • Learn to care for live animals, understanding policies and procedures around them.
Required Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of two years retail leadership experience preferred, including profit/loss, scheduling, shrink control, payroll, staffing, and supervision. Must be 18+ with a valid driver’s license.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required; ability to read, write, and count accurately is essential regardless of education level.

Certifications: None required.

  • Time and stress management.
  • Basic computer skills and math aptitude.
  • Ability to perform principal responsibilities of Team Members.
Working Conditions
  • Indoor environment with moderate noise; outdoor areas are hard surfaces.
  • Shifts typically no less than 4 hours and may exceed 8 hours.
  • Promote safety and adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Travel as needed for training or support.
Physical Requirements
  • Non-sedentary role requiring movement throughout the store and outdoor areas.
  • Ability to lift, move, and operate equipment safely and effectively.
  • Must be able to communicate and operate store equipment, including handling merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
