Overall Job Summary

This position is responsible for proficiency in all areas of a retail operation. The role serves as the second in charge of operations to the Store Manager, providing leadership and direction to the store team, ensuring a positive customer shopping experience, and performing operational activities throughout the store. The position also promotes a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors, and involves training Team Members on policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)

Candidates must be available, flexible, adaptable, and service-oriented. Key responsibilities include:

• Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
• Work scheduled shifts, including varied hours, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
• Support a safe and productive work environment by following policies and procedures.
• Support selling initiatives by engaging with customers, advising on products/services, and creating memorable experiences.
• Assist in store operations, including sales, profit, customer loyalty, planning, and delegating tasks.
• Support staffing, training, and development of Team Members.
• Execute merchandising activities, perform opening/closing procedures, and handle bank deposits.
• Assess store conditions, organize workflow, and ensure merchandise recovery.
• Participate in freight processing, price changes, and customer issue resolution.
• Adhere to loss prevention standards and communicate with team members about responsibilities and goals.
• Operate cash registers and assist in policy application.
• Ensure the safety and care of live animals, including sanitizing tanks and maintaining animal habitats.
• Complete all documentation related to job duties.

Required Qualifications

Experience in retail leadership is required, with pet/live animal knowledge preferred. Supervisory experience is a plus. Candidates must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory; the ability to read, write, and count accurately is essential.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

Ability to perform all team responsibilities, strong interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and pet/live animal knowledge are preferred.

Working Conditions

Work is generally indoors with moderate noise. Shifts vary but are typically no less than 4 hours and may exceed 8 hours. The environment is safe, with adequate lighting and temperature. Team Members must be able to move quickly and safely throughout the store and outdoor areas.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must frequently lift or reach overhead, stand, kneel, crouch, and climb ladders. They should be able to operate store equipment, communicate effectively, and complete documentation. Ability to travel and operate a vehicle is also required. The role is non-sedentary, requiring stamina and physical ability to move throughout the store.
