Job summary

Mass General Brigham is seeking a Central Sterile Technician to independently perform sterile processing, including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and packaging of reusable medical devices and surgical instrumentation. You will follow IFU and departmental standards to support quality, productivity, and patient care.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, 1–2 years of healthcare CS experience, and CRCST or CSPDT certification.

Qualifications

  • CRCST or CSPDT certification required.
  • 1–2 years experience as Central Sterile Technician preferred.
  • Working knowledge of sterile processing principles and infection prevention standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage of reusable medical devices and surgical instrumentation per procedures and IFU.
  • Operate washers and sterilizers following departmental policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality and completeness; identify items needing repair or replacement.
  • Assemble instrument trays and procedure sets per standardized listings and quality standards.
  • Use instrument tracking systems to document processing and maintain traceability.
  • Maintain inventory of sterile supplies and processing consumables.
  • Transport instruments and supplies to support procedural areas.
  • Communicate equipment malfunctions or quality issues to appropriate staff.
  • Comply with regulatory, accreditation, infection prevention, and departmental standards.
  • Participate in training, competency validation and continuous improvement activities.

Job description

Job Summary

Responsible for independently performing sterile processing activities, including the reprocessing of specialty instrumentation and equipment. Applies advanced knowledge of sterile processing practices, manufacturer instructions for use (IFU), and departmental standards to support quality, productivity, and customer service objectives.

Essential Functions
  • Performs decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable medical devices and surgical instrumentation in accordance with established procedures and manufacturer's Instructions for Use (IFU).
  • Operates sterile processing equipment, including washers, sterilizers, and related technologies, following departmental policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect instruments and equipment for cleanliness, functionality, and completeness; identifies items requiring repair or replacement.
  • Assembles instrument trays, procedure sets, and equipment according to standardized tray listings and quality standards.
  • Utilizes instrument tracking systems to document processing activities and maintain traceability of reusable medical devices.
  • Maintains inventory of sterile supplies, processing consumables, and departmental stock to support operational needs.
  • Transports instruments, equipment, and supplies to support procedural and patient care areas.
  • Recognizes and communicates equipment malfunctions, processing concerns, quality issues, and safety risks to appropriate personnel.
  • Complies with applicable regulatory, accreditation, infection prevention, and departmental standards.
  • Participates in training, competency validation, and continuous improvement activities.
Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent required.

Licenses and Credentials

Certified Registered Central Service Technician [CRCST] - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or C.S.P.D.T - Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician - Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. required.

Experience

Experience as a Central Sterile Technician or similar role in a healthcare setting 1-2 years required.

  • Working knowledge of sterile processing principles, instrumentation, sterilization methods, and infection prevention standards.
  • Proficiency in instrument assembly, packaging, sterilization, and equipment handling.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures, quality standards, and safety protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks with accuracy.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Understanding of workflow prioritization and departmental operations in a healthcare environment.
