Job summary

Northwell is seeking a dedicated Sterile Processing Technician to manage the cleaning, sterilization and packaging of surgical instruments. You will operate washers, sterilizers and related equipment, follow strict instrument counts, and ensure inventory and safety standards are met across multiple hospital areas.

This role requires a High School Diploma (or equivalent) and CRCST/CSPD certification with ongoing continuing education.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Sterile processing certification (CRCST or CSPD) or provisional CRCST.
• Must complete NY State continuing education credits to maintain certification.
• Prior experience processing surgical information preferred.
• Ability to lift/carry 25 pounds and stand/bend for extended periods.
• Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.

Responsibilities

• Disassembles, cleans, sterilizes, reassembles and packages sterile supplies per specs.
• Operates washers, sterilizers, ultrasonic machines, steam and EO sterilizers, heat sealers.
• Adheres to instrument count sheets for surgical sets and case carts.
• Covers and rotates trays and sets per sterile storage guidelines.
• Follows safety protocols to prevent injuries.
• Retrieves used trays, instruments and equipment from hospital areas for decontamination.
• Examines instruments and patient care equipment for cleanliness, assembly and functionality.
• Notifies supervisor or biomedical engineer of malfunctions and records related info.
• Receives and fills requisitions from hospital departments; communicates instrument needs.
• Transports sterile supplies to surgical and clinical locations.
• Maintains department inventory and supplies.
• Maintains a contaminant-free work environment and documents daily activities.
• Adheres to AORN, AAMI and Joint Commission standards for monitoring.
• Participates in department quality control and in-service training.
