System Innovation is seeking qualified candidates to support the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory (DEVCOM-ARL) K-12 STEM Education and Outreach Program at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
The STEM Outreach Program Coordinator will support ARL's efforts to inspire and engage K-12 students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This candidate will help plan and execute STEM education and outreach activities, coordinate participation by Army scientists and engineers, support curriculum and student instruction, manage outreach events and program data, and assist with operation of ARL's STEM education and maker-space facilities.
The ideal candidate combines K–12 STEM education/outreach experience with strong program coordination, event logistics, data tracking, and hands-on comfort in a STEM maker-space environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, coordinate, and support K-12 STEM outreach programs, activities, and events.
- Engage ARL scientists and engineers to participate in STEM education and outreach activities.
- Coordinate career talks, laboratory demonstrations, community events, and other STEM engagement activities.
- Deliver presentations and basic STEM instruction to students.
- Review existing STEM educational materials and assist with the development of new curriculum and activities.
- Help translate Army research and technology topics into engaging educational experiences for K-12 audiences.
Community Outreach & Event Coordination
- Coordinate logistical support for STEM outreach programs, community events, career talks, tabling events, and laboratory demonstrations.
- Coordinate with ARL scientists and engineers to secure participation in community STEM initiatives and outreach activities.
- Prepare and maintain materials and equipment required for outreach events, including tabling kits, student computers, displays, and related supplies.
- Attend outreach events and provide on-site program support.
- Support and, when appropriate, conduct community laboratory demonstrations.
- Accurately track STEM community outreach activities and ensure required activities are captured in the DEVCOM STEM Outreach Report.
Program Administration & Data Management
- Maintain program databases, participation records, and other program information.
- Track outreach activities and program metrics.
- Respond to student, parent, educator, and stakeholder correspondence.
- Support recurring reports, data calls, and administrative requirements.
STEM Maker Space & Facility Support
- Serve as technical lead for the STEM facility maker space and support daily operations of ARL's Educational Outreach Office.
- Maintain STEM equipment and materials and support inventory accountability.
- Provide users with equipment orientation, safety briefings, and training.
- Follow and enforce applicable safety procedures and standard operating procedures.
- Identify equipment maintenance, supply, and upgrade requirements.
- Develop proficiency in operating 3D printing equipment within the required training period.
- Coordinate facility, IT, logistics, maintenance, visitor, and related operational support as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree plus at least 2 years of specialized experience in program coordination; OR
- At least 4 years of specialized experience demonstrating the ability to perform the responsibilities of the position.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be eligible for and able to obtain the required Secret security clearance.
- Must be eligible to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC).
- Must successfully complete required screening/background-check requirements associated with regular interaction with minors, including the applicable Child Care National Agency Check and Inquiry (CNACI).
- Must complete required Government safety training and certifications.
- Must be able to work primarily on-site at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
- Must be available to support occasional Saturday STEM events and approved travel.
Preferred:
- Degree or professional experience in a STEM-related field.
- Experience as a STEM educator, instructor, outreach coordinator, or similar role.
- Experience working with K-12 students, schools, youth programs, camps, museums, laboratories, universities, or community STEM programs.
- Experience planning educational programs, workshops, demonstrations, or community events.
- Strong presentation and public-speaking skills.
- Experience coordinating scientists, engineers, educators, volunteers, or community partners.
- Experience maintaining databases, program metrics, reports, or participant records.
- Familiarity with maker spaces, 3D printing, laboratory environments, or hands-on STEM activities.
- Experience supporting the Department of Defense, Army, federal research organizations, or similar technical environments is a plus.
