Job summary

Ellwood Specialty Metals Company in Sterling Heights, MI, is hiring a Saw Operator I to cut steel or aluminum stock to customer specs, inspect quality, and prep material for the next operation. This non-exempt role reports to the Operations Manager and requires basic measuring skills, ability to operate saw equipment, and adherence to safety regulations in a shop environment.

Qualifications

• Working mechanical knowledge/aptitude; additional training provided.
• Able to understand basic correspondence, instructions, graphs, and/or charts.
• Ability to perform basic arithmetic and use basic numerical concepts.
• Ability to use measuring devices such as tapes and gauges.
• Vision includes acuity near and far, color, peripheral vision and depth perception.
• Hearing ability to exchange information with co-workers and management should faults/issues with material or equipment is detected.

Responsibilities

• Receive, store, handle, cuts and ships material to meet shop and customer requirements.
• Loads and unloads material with a forklift or crane, positioning material as required.
• Sets up and operates saw, selecting proper feeds and speeds, maintaining coolant.
• Inspects the quality of the material during and after the cut to ensure square pieces.
• Completes required production reports in the computer system.
• Reports defective material and faulty equipment to the Operations Manager or Maintenance Department.
• Maintains a clean and safe work environment and abides by all plant safety regulations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
