Job summary

Symetra Financial Corporation is seeking a Claims Supervisor to lead a team of examiners in the Short-Term Disability unit. You will mentor, coach, and organize activities to ensure accurate adjudication, quality, productivity, and strong service for claimants and policyholders.

You will supervise workflow, set production objectives, collaborate with sales, underwriting, actuarial and other partners, conduct file reviews, and drive ongoing training and development for the team while modeling

Qualifications

  • BA/BS or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of group disability claims experience.
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to function with limited supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Word and Excel.

About the role

This position is responsible for providing timely and accurate support to our claimants, policyholders, and the claims department. Plan, mentor, organize and coach activities within the Claims Unit and ultimately be responsible for the quality of work, productivity and service of a team of claims examiners.

What you will do
  • Supervises the processing of Short-Term Disability (STD) claims, handled in an STD Claims Unit, to ensure timely and appropriate adjudication within Company guidelines.
  • Ensures achievement of specific customer service and production objectives as established by the Company.
  • Supports claims partnership with sales, underwriting, actuarial, customer service and other internal departments.
  • Utilizes the file review and coaching process to continually improve and develop the examiners' skills relative to case strategy, decision-making, negotiation and communication.
  • Handles a caseload of claims as necessary.
  • Models open and inclusive behavior.
  • Projects a positive image and leads by example.
  • Completes special projects as assigned by management.
  • Seeks every opportunity to accept challenging assignments and developmental opportunities.
  • Responds to escalated and service related calls.
  • Releases and reviews payments within approved authority limits.
  • Releases and reviews denial letters.
  • Collaborates with management and business partners in the development, organization and execution of improvement opportunities and performance capabilities.
  • Conducts routine file reviews to ensure quality and production goals are achieved.
  • Ensures process consistency through continuous communication with the examiners.
  • Supports training efforts through personal involvement and reinforcement/follow-up with examiners.

Compensation

Hourly Range: $27.10 - $45.16 plus eligibility for annual bonus program.

Who You Are
  • BA/BS or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of group disability claims experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel.
