Job summary

NYC Parks seeks a qualified Stationary Engineer to maintain and operate heating, refrigeration, and related systems in public buildings and pumping stations.

The role involves supervising equipment, reading meters, and training staff. A 6-month temporary assignment starts 10/01/2026, with 40 hours per week. NYC licensure and EPA certifications are required.

Qualifications

• A valid Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01/Q-99*), issued by the NYC Fire Department.
• A valid Universal Section 608 Technician Certification issued by EPA-approved organization.
• Within 90 days of appointment, a valid certificate of fitness for S-95/S-13/S-12/A-35 issued by NYC Fire Department.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, and adjust steam power plant and building equipment.
• Maintain boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, and HVAC systems.
• Perform periodic inspections and minor repairs.
• Operate control consoles and building management systems.

Job description

NYC Parks is an award-winning city agency that builds and cares for public spaces for New Yorkers to connect, play and enjoy. These public spaces, encompassing over 5,000 properties and 14% of the city’s land and coastline, include seawalls and waterfronts, pedestrian bridges, beaches and boardwalks, parks and playgrounds, historic houses, recreation centers and pools.

We seek a qualified Stationary Engineers for 6 months (temporary position) to maintain and operate heating, refrigeration, or other types of systems essential for our operations.

Major Responsibilities

• Under supervision operate, maintain, and adjust steam power plant and electronic mechanical building equipment.
• Operate, maintain, and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, equipment for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, lighting and associated equipment in public buildings and pumping stations.
• Make periodic inspections of equipment and minor repairs to such equipment.
• Operate control consoles and building management systems in control rooms.
• Prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts.
• Instruct and train subordinates and other personnel.
• Read and log meters, gauges, and other recording devices.
• Perform preventative maintenance. Inspect low-pressure boilers in accordance with a unified inspection procedure instituted by the New York City Department of Buildings. Keep records and produce reports.

Qualification Requirements

1. A valid Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01/Q-99*), issued by the New York City Fire Department;
2. A valid Universal Section 608 Technician Certification issued by a certifying organization approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Certain positions require that candidates possess, within 90 days from the day of appointment, a valid certificate of fitness for Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems (S-95), Citywide Standpipe Systems (S-13), Citywide Sprinkler Systems (S-12) and/or to Operate and Maintain Air Compressors (A-35), issued by the New York City Fire Department.

*All required certificates must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.

License Requirement

1. A valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
