Job summary

NYC Parks in New York City is seeking a qualified Stationary Engineer for a 6-month temporary assignment to operate, maintain, and repair essential heating, refrigeration, and building systems across public facilities and pumping stations. The role requires a High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license (NYC) and EPA 608 certification, with certificates maintained throughout the assignment.

Preference for ammonia refrigeration experience and chiller plant know-how; shift work and a NYC driver

Qualifications

• Valid High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license issued by NYC Department of Buildings.
• Valid Universal Section 608 EPA refrigerant certification from a recognized agency.
• Certificates must be maintained for the duration of employment.
• Within 90 days, obtain S-95, S-13, S-12 and/or A-35 certificates issued by NYC Fire Department.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, and adjust steam power plant and building equipment under supervision.
• Maintain boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, and related HVAC equipment in public buildings and pumping stations.
• Perform periodic inspections and minor repairs on equipment.
• Operate control consoles and building management systems in control rooms.
• Prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts.
• Instruct and train subordinates and other personnel.
• Read and log meters, gauges, and other recording devices.
• Perform preventative maintenance and log inspection records as required by NYC Buildings.

Job description

NYC Parks is an award-winning city agency that builds and cares for public spaces for New Yorkers to connect, play and enjoy. These public spaces, encompassing over 5,000 properties and 14% of the city's land and coastline, include seawalls and waterfronts, pedestrian bridges, beaches and boardwalks, parks and playgrounds, historic houses, recreation centers and pools. We seek a qualified Stationary Engineers for 6 months (temporary position) to maintain and operate heating, refrigeration, or other types of systems essential for our operations.

Major Responsibilities

• Under supervision operate, maintain, and adjust steam power plant and electronic mechanical building equipment.
• Operate, maintain, and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, equipment for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, lighting and associated equipment in public buildings and pumping stations.
• Make periodic inspections of equipment and minor repairs to such equipment.
• Operate control consoles and building management systems in control rooms.
• Prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts.
• Instruct and train subordinates and other personnel.
• Read and log meters, gauges, and other recording devices.
• Perform preventative maintenance. Inspect low-pressure boilers in accordance with a unified inspection procedure instituted by the New York City Department of Buildings. Keep records and produce reports.

Qualification Requirements

1. A valid Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01/Q-99*), issued by the New York City Fire Department; and
2. A valid Universal Section 608 Technician Certification issued by a certifying organization approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Certain positions require that candidates possess, within 90 days from the day of appointment, a valid certificate of fitness for Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems (S-95), Citywide Standpipe Systems (S-13), Citywide Sprinkler Systems (S-12) and/or to Operate and Maintain Air Compressors (A-35), issued by the New York City Fire Department.

*All required certificates must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.

License Requirement

1. A valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferred Skills

2. 2. A valid certificate for oil burning equipment issued by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
3. 3. Operate, maintain and adjust a chiller plant and all associated auxiliary equipment.

5. 5. Ability to work rotating shifts, nights and weekends as needed.
