Position Overview:

The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice seeks a motivated individual knowledgeable in high-pressure boiler operation and HVAC system maintenance. The role involves managing power-generating machinery, working closely with team members across bargaining units, and maintaining facility infrastructure. Candidates with a passion for maintenance are encouraged to apply.

Essential Functions:
  1. Operate, repair, and shut down HVAC and related systems, including fans, compressors, engines, and refrigeration units.
  2. Ensure safe and efficient equipment operation through regular rounds and monitoring.
  3. Maintain logs of operations, readings, and maintenance activities.
  4. Use tools to perform repairs, check safety devices, and address operational needs.
  5. Test and treat water systems as needed.
  6. Perform additional duties within scope as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Completion of at least eight (8) years of elementary education.
  2. Four (4) years of experience operating power plants and firing boilers.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Basic understanding of electrical generating equipment (2+ years or coursework).
  2. Experience maintaining operational logs (2+ years).
  3. Stationary Engineer License.
  4. EPA 608 CFC Refrigeration License.
  5. Ability to recognize and respond to emergency conditions.
  6. Ability to perform calculations and keep simple records.
Conditions of Employment:
  1. Pass a background check and drug screening.
  2. Ability to perform very heavy physical work, including lifting over 100 pounds.
  3. Work overtime, evenings, weekends, and be on call as needed.
  4. Possess a valid driver’s license and ability to travel.
  5. Physical ability to walk, climb, stand, and work in noisy, dusty environments.
About the Agency:

The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice aims to develop youth skills, strengthen families, and promote community safety through a comprehensive, developmentally focused care model at five facilities across Illinois. The department serves approximately 150 youth and manages over 500 youth on Aftercare.

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8AM to 4PM
