Job summary

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is hiring a Contact Ranger at Caledon State Park to greet visitors, share park information, and collect parking fees. You will serve as the first point of contact and provide directions, answer questions about park programs, and help with fee details.

This position is year-round and part-time, working 3–4 days per week, including weekends and some evenings. You will operate a computer, cash register, and assist with park events as needed.

Caledon State Park is accepting applications for a Contact Ranger position.

Job Summary

A Contact Ranger is the first point of contact at the park. They provide excellent customer service by welcoming visitors, providing accurate information about park amenities, providing directions to park points of interest, and answering questions about park Interpretive Programs. The Contact Ranger collects parking fees and other fees depending on park operational policy.

This position works 3-4 days per week, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings. This is a year-round, part-time position.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

• Required to operate a computer, cash register, and multi-line phone system.
• Provides accurate and detailed information on the park's fees, directions, pricing, annual passes, trail information, park interpretive programs, and local area information.
• Ensures the office and/or contact station is well-stocked and maintained daily.
• Sells merchandise and keeps sales area well-stocked.
• Works primarily in the Visitor Center but may assist with parking and other duties for park events.
• Performs other office duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be able to provide high-quality customer service and communicate verbally with guests.
• Able to operate a computer and cash register.
• Must be able to reconcile the register and perform daily register transactions.
• Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.

Additional Considerations

• Prior experience in customer service, recreation, or related field.
• Prior experience in a retail setting.

Special Instructions

• Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
• Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
• Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
• Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
