Job summary

Whitley Penn is seeking a State & Local Tax Manager to join our Austin-area team and lead complex tax projects for multiple clients. The role emphasizes in-office collaboration in Dallas, Plano, Austin or Houston and requires CPA certification, strong communication, and a track record of client service excellence.

The candidate will manage engagements, develop staff, and contribute to new business. It is a full-time, exempt position with typical hours and possible overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• Active CPA license required.
• 5–7 years of state & local income/franchise tax compliance and consulting experience.
• Advanced technical knowledge of state income/franchise tax law and regulations.
• Strong communication skills for broad audiences.
• Strong professional presence and leadership abilities; able to mentor staff.
• Experience building and maintaining excellent client relationships and expanding books of business.

Responsibilities

• Provide state & local income/franchise tax consulting and compliance services to diverse clients.
• Advise on sourcing, nexus, and accounting for state taxes.
• Review and/or prepare state income tax returns.
• Manage client relationships, engagement economics, and staffing across engagements.
• Monitor deadlines and engagement budgets; update Partners on status.
