Job summary

Burns & McDonnell seeks a Staff Substation Engineer in Chicago to develop design deliverables for high-voltage substations under the supervision of a licensed PE. You will prepare design packages, perform electrical studies, and support client presentations and field inspections.

The role requires 3 years of substation experience with ABET-accredited degrees or FE/engineer-in-training certification, plus strong communication and leadership skills. Competitive benefits offered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from ABET-accredited program with 3 years of substation engineering experience.
• Alternative degree with FE exam and 3 years of substation engineering experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated leadership and teamwork abilities.
• Engineers in Training (EIT) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop design deliverables for high-voltage substations (13kV–765kV) under licensed PE supervision.
• Prepare substation design packages: physical arrangement, protection/controls, grounding, lightning, lighting, security.
• Develop calculations: insulation, station service, DC sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, conduit fill.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specs, BOM, and other deliverables.
• Apply IEEE, NESC, and other standards in design work.
• Support field inspections and client presentations; assist in proposals.
