Job summary

Burns & McDonnell seeks a Staff Substation Engineer to develop design deliverables for high-voltage substations (13kV–765kV). You will work under a licensed engineer through design and construction, adapting plans to budget and client needs, from conceptual phases to completion.

You will prepare design packages, calculations, BOMs, and equipment specs while supporting field inspections and client presentations. Collaboration and adherence to QA/QC guide projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree from ABET-accredited program in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering; 3 years substation Eng. experience preferred.
• Bachelor degree in Engineering Technology with FE exam and 3 years substation Eng. experience preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient in MS Office; strong attention to detail and organization.
• Demonstrated leadership and teamwork; ability to apply engineering principles to broad tasks.

Responsibilities

• Supports substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
• Prepares substation design packages: arrangements, relaying, protection, and lighting.
• Develops substation calculations: insulation, voltage drop, cable sizing, conduit fill.
• Prepares drawings, cost estimates, equipment specs, BOM, and deliverables.
• Applies IEEE, NESC standards and other procedures.
• Supports field inspections on public/private utility systems.
• Researches data and supports client presentations and project status.
