Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Substation Engineer to develop design deliverables for high‑voltage substation projects (13kV–765kV). You’ll work under a licensed PE to support concept through completion, including design packages, studies, and client presentations. Strong communication and 3 years of substation experience are required.

This role emphasizes teamwork, QA/QC adherence, and collaboration with project teams to meet schedules while adapting designs to budget and client needs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program and 3 years of substation engineering experience.
• Alternative: Bachelor Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Technology from ABET accredited program with FE exam completed.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
• Demonstrated leadership and collaborative teamwork capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Develops substation design packages including arrangement, relaying, control, grounding, and lighting.
• Performs substation calculations for insulation, DC systems, voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fill.
• Supports field inspections and project data collection with project managers.
• Assists with client presentations, proposals, and QA/QC reviews.
