Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Wallingford, CT seeks a Staff Substation Engineer to develop design deliverables for high-voltage substations (13kV–765kV) under a licensed professional engineer, guiding projects from concept through construction.

You will prepare design packages, conduct electrical studies such as grounding and lightning analysis, prepare sketches, cost estimates, BOMs, and support field inspections, client presentations, and project QA/QC.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering (ABET) with 3 years substation experience, consulting preferred.
• Bachelor's in electrical engineering technology or mechanical engineering technology (ABET) with FE exam; 3 years substation experience, consulting preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)

Responsibilities

• Supports substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
• Prepares and develops substation design packages (layout, relaying, control, grounding, lighting, security).
• Develops substation calculations (insulation, DC systems, voltage drop, cable sizing).
• Prepares design sketches, cost estimates, BOMs, and other deliverables.
• Applies IEEE, NESC and other standards; supports field inspections.
• Supports client presentations, reports, and visualizations.
• Assists with proposals and project scheduling; ensures QA/QC compliance.
• Performs design quality reviews and communicates issues with clients.
