Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Wallingford, CT, and other locations, seeks an Assistant Substation Engineer to assist licensed engineers in delivering design deliverables for high-voltage substations (13kV to 765kV). The role supports design through construction, adapts plans to budget and client needs, and involves field inspections and data compilation.

The position emphasizes collaboration, attention to detail, and adherence to standards such as IEEE and NESC.

Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field from an accredited program.
• ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
• Internship or related consulting experience is preferred.
• GPA of 3.0 or higher is strongly preferred.
• EIT certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the design of substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
• Assists in preparing substation design packages including physical arrangement, relaying, and protection.
• Assists in developing substation calculations (insulation, station service, DC systems, battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing).
• Prepares design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specs, BOM, and other deliverables.
• Applies IEEE, NESC, and other standards; participates in field inspections.
• Compiles project data and assists with client presentations and reports.
• Works with project team to meet deadlines and QA/QC guidelines.
