Job summary

Metriport is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in San Francisco to help scale our open-source data intelligence platform. You will own backend architecture, drive reliability, and mentor engineers in a fast-paced, autonomous team.

This role blends hands-on coding with technical leadership across distributed systems, APIs, and data pipelines. You’ll ship high-impact features, set patterns for low-latency integrations, and shape our engineering culture as we grow.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of full-stack engineering experience.
• Experience leading engineers — formally or informally.
• Experience scaling cloud-based platforms to many millions or billions of transactions daily.
• You've made engineering teams faster — better developer experience, more testability, shorter release cycles.
• You're located in San Francisco Bay Area or willing to relocate.
• Bonus: Healthcare data standards/technologies knowledge (FHIR, EHR/HL7, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Define technical direction for low-latency, scalable, event-based systems integrations.
• Work across our backend-focused platform including public APIs and health-network integrations.
• Drive projects end-to-end from ideation to production rollout.
• Occasionally act as Team Lead, breaking down work and unblocking teammates.
• Mentor engineers, review designs, and improve dev processes and tooling.
• Participate in bi-weekly sprint planning, standups, and on-call rotation.
