Job summary

OpenMined is seeking a Senior/Staff Software Engineer to lead the NSAI squad and contribute hands-on in architecture, coding, and engineering standards. You will guide distributed systems that power two core products, enabling live data querying with attribution and secure, scalable design.

The role emphasizes mentoring engineers across time zones, delivering reliable software, and shaping product roadmaps with senior technical judgment in a fully remote, mission-driven nonprofit environment.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Strong Python proficiency including FastAPI and async patterns
• Distributed systems and API design experience
• Practical RAG and information retrieval experience
• Demonstration of technical leadership and mentoring capabilities
• Comfort with ambiguity and resource constraints
• Async‑fluent with strong written communication
• Cross‑functional collaboration to align engineers and non‑technical stakeholders

Responsibilities

• Own NSAI squad architecture end to end across stack
• Drive production readiness, monitoring, and runbooks
• Mentor team, establish engineering best practices and code standards
• Collaborate on core technology stack strategy and define interfaces
• Partner with product lead to realistic roadmaps and milestones
• Deliver quarterly engineering goals with high impact
• Manage team output, balance workload and professional development
• Create technical documentation to support speed and knowledge transfer
• Lead a team of 2–4 engineers and conduct performance reviews
