Job summary

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine seeks a Staff Software Engineer, R&D, to join the DePuy Synthes Orthopaedics team. Based in Raynham, MA or Palm Beach Gardens, FL, you will lead embedded software for medical devices, contribute across the full lifecycle, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in a regulated environment.

You will build software in C/C++ and Python for production systems, ensure design controls, and participate in regulatory submissions. Travel up to 10% may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
• Strong software development experience in C and C++.
• Experience developing software using Python for automation, testing, tooling, or product features.
• Experience developing software for embedded microcontroller systems.
• Experience with bare‑metal and RTOS‑based embedded systems development.
• Experience with embedded Linux development, including device drivers, services, and application‑level software.
• Experience with board bring‑up, hardware/software integration, and low‑level debugging.
• Experience delivering commercial products through a complete product development lifecycle.
• Experience developing software for FDA‑regulated medical devices and regulated design controls.
• Willing to work in medical environments and travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the Software Technical Lead for strategic capital equipment and power tool development programs.
• Lead embedded software architecture, design, development, integration, and verification for safety‑critical medical device applications.
• Act as the primary software SME within a cross‑functional development team.
• Develop production software in C/C++ and Python with hands‑on leadership.
• Translate product requirements into scalable software architectures and detailed designs.
• Drive all phases of the software development lifecycle from requirements to post‑market support.
• Lead hardware/software integration activities and system-level problem solving.
• Direct, prioritize, and review software work with external partners and vendors.
• Delegate development activities while maintaining accountability for quality and timelines.
• Evaluate alternatives and make decisions balancing performance, maintainability, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance.
• Champion software engineering procedures including code reviews, version control, automated testing, and documentation.
• Provide mentorship to internal and external contributors and represent software in design reviews and regulatory submissions.
