Job summary

Block is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Acquiring team to own complex card payments systems at scale. You will lead projects expanding direct network connections, implement network mandates, and optimize routing, validation, and costs across Square, Cash App, and Afterpay.

You will ship production code, build tooling, review designs, mentor teammates, and establish durable frameworks that others can adopt.

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of card payment flows and network rules.
• Experience with message-level payment integrations (ISO 8583 or similar).
• Proven track record delivering complex payments projects.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction from design to production for acquiring projects.
• Lead engineers and coordinate with product and finance operations.
• Write production code and build testing/cert tooling.
• Define routing, retries, and cost strategies backed by data.
• Mentor engineers and raise technical capability across the team.
